Is Your Current Career Search Too Ambitious?
Thursday December 4, 2008
A career search for jobs that are slightly higher than your experience would usually allow can be counterproductive. This is the case for two reasons.
First of all, you minimise your ability to get a job quickly if you perform a career search with more advanced jobs in mind. Employers are unlikely to choose you over more experienced candidates if there is a lot of competition, so you essentially end up wasting time on jobs you know you will not get.
Secondly, if a career search for higher level jobs ends in success, how do you know you will be capable of performing well in the role? If you take on a position that is beyond you at this stage in your career, it could actually hurt your overall career progression.
Essentially, when doing a career search, it is important to be ambitious, but reasonably so. Choose jobs that are a step up if you are ready for them and avoid those that are likely to be more responsibility than you can currently handle.
